Don't you just hate it when you order a product (when shopping online) after a series of steps to do so and the website masterfully tells you after you've paid that the product is out of stock or is backordered?

Want to know how to ensure that the product you want is in stock? Easy. If the website doesn't say so right on the product page then call them and tell them the product number if it's that important that you get the product right away.

Most people will find it hard to not tell you that the product is backordered for the next month, when you call them. And if the website doesn't have an accessible phone number, shop at another website that does.

Of course if it doesn't matter that much then you could just learn to accept the possibility of not getting the product you found during your online shopping experience for a few more days, or weeks. It's your call.

One of the major issues with shopping online for most folks is the issue of being able to trust that one's transaction is not going to end up someplace it wasn't intended to be. So, how can you ensure that this doesn't happen to you?

Well, for one you can ensure that the website has a secure order page and the security certificate is still valid. Look at the bottom of your webscreen and look for the little 'locked' lock. Click on it and read what pops up. Make sure the dates are right.

- do shop around. You can always get a better price. To a point. Stop when you think you've reached bottom - then buy.

- trust the site you're shopping at. If you don't feel 'right' about buying from that online shop, then don't.

- a highly polished, good looking site does not necessarily equate to legitimacy

- contact info should be readily available. No hidden stuff here. (You don't walk into an offline shop and see all the sales clerk duck behind the clothing racks and sales counter when you walk in, do you?)

- don't ever provide online credit card information to a site that isn't secure. Period.

- there are many sites now that offer free shipping for all online shopping orders over a certain price. Find these sites. They abound.

I'm a parent of three young boys. It wasn't too long ago that the younger twins were just babies. So it still fresh in my mind how reassured one needs to feel that the sites they are contemplating buying from during their online shopping excursions are reputable.

I've found that a good way to ensure this is to perhaps make a small token purchase from a site that seems promising as far as providing good shopping resources. If the site comes through to delivery with flying colors then let all the stops out and make them your site to continue to shop at.

I recently purchased a product that cost over $100 from a site and AFTER paying for it I found out that it was back-ordered. Now that was a frustration I didn't need. But hey, they were happy - they had my money, but I didn't get the product for over a month.

I did get a lot of apologies from them for the situation 'but it was out of their hands'.

Goes to show one how vital it is that in today's online shopping e-commerce marketplace that trustworthiness for all involved in the transaction is key.

Offline or Online Shopping?

After recently visiting the parking lots of a couple of malls in the area I decided that the way that I have been doing my holiday shopping is the way to go. But most don't know that. They are still shopping like the world did in the 20th century.

Pick a mall to go to.
Drive there.
Struggle over finding a parking space within half a mile of the mall.
Struggle through the crowded walking areas and stores.
Cross your fingers and hope the items you desire are still in stock in the store.
And so on and so forth.

Nope. Not for me anymore. Online shopping is my way now. No crowds. No struggles. No crossed fingers. But the worst of this way of shopping may be that one gets a sore finger from clicking that mouse so much.

But hey, things could be worse - at least we can't forget where we parked the car when we're sitting in front of our computer. Right?
